I was driving my family in our van heading towards Jasper when we happened upon a solitary mountain goat at an unobtrusive salt lick along the side of the road. The optimist in me said with one mountain goat here must more nearby so we hiked down an embankment and were delighted to find a group of about 20 goats of various ages and stages of molting. They seemed to be very relaxed and at ease with us as rare visitors to their Shangri-La. We thoroughly enjoyed spending hours there as the remainder of the afternoon flew by and the sun dropped below a distant mountain range.
